For me, cycling in the Netherlands means designated, bike-prioritized cycle paths. They make it a low barrier to get on your bike, and ultimately I can commute to work safe and sound. Still, you need to be extra careful with the brake when using the e-bike, especially when it’s not compulsory to wear a helmet here.

Here in Holland, there are safe bike lanes on which to ride. In America, it was just a stripe on the street that cars ran over. You literally took your life in your hands when riding a bike in the city. Also, I’ve discovered that bells on bikes here are an option – or so it appears – as no one uses theirs.

I see the Netherlands as a bike country not just because of the amazing cycling infrastructure, but also because of the deeply ingrained social acceptance of ‘cycling as a normal means of transportation’. Nowhere else can you see people carrying their couch in their cargo bikes, taking four kids to school on a single bike or seeing the mass of cycling commuters crowding the roads during rush hours.

Here, it took me a couple of years to get used to it, but once you do though, you feel like it’s THE way to go. It's lightweight and very versatile. And of course, if you have any ambition to save money, with the current fuel prices for example, cycling is a great place to start…
